Deneb is somewhere around 2,600 light-years away, although astronomers still aren’t certain of the star’s exact distance. With an average visual magnitude of 1.25, it is the brightest star in the constellation Cygnus and the 19th brightest star in the sky. Deneb, Alpha Cygni (α Cyg), is a class A supergiant located at an approximate distance of 1,550 light years from Earth. Such is the case with Deneb, a 1st magnitude star and one of the most distant stars you can see without optical aid. If you want that in miles, it is about 18,984,080,062,636,759.12, based on 1 Ly = 5,878,625,373,183.61 miles. This star, at about 1,500 light-years ’ distance, is the most remote (and brightest intrinsically) of the 20 apparently brightest stars. In physics, the inverse square law describes through mathematics what humans already perceive and understand intuitively: The farther away we are from a light source, the dimmer it appears. Using the original Hipparcos data that was released in 1997, the parallax to the star was given as 1.01000 which gave the calculated distance to Deneb as 3229.34 light years away from Earth or 990.10 parsecs. Deneb is about 2600 lightyears away, but with stars of that distance, there is a large margin of error (about 200ly) when approximating distance, so we will just say it’s between 2400 to 2800 lightyears away. So it’s only a simple matter of logic to deduce that if a light source appears to be very bright, but is also known to be very far away, it must possess great luminosity. Deneb's adopted distance from the Earth is around 802 parsecs (2,620 ly). These methods give different distances, and all have significant margins of error. This is derived by a variety of different methods, including spectral luminosity classes, atmospheric modelling, stellar evolution models, assumed membership of the Cygnus OB7 association, and direct measurement of angular diameter. (Its exact distance is uncertain.)
